Newest Hand plane flea market find
I actually got this from a friend who sells at the flea market yesterday, before he put if for sale there.
It is a Millers Falls #18BG. Same as a Stanley #6. The plane appears to be a type 5, which would have been made between 1966 and 1978. The "G" designation means it was made to be sold to the federal government. Hmmmm. It has not been used much, and the way it was set up shows someone knew how to use it. The cap iron is set about 1/32" from the end of the iron, and it sharp enough as is to take a pretty good shaving. The handles are goncalo alves with a heavy red lacquer coating on them, and are in very good shape. It looks like it has mostley sat around for the last 40 or 50 years. $27. I'm happy.

Every bit as good as a Stanley. I don't like the feel of the straight handle, but it works fine. Good price too.

Here are 3 - a type 2, 3, and 4. All are as found in very nice condition. All 3 have the 2 (3 really) piece lever cap that was touted as superior and which was abandoned at your 18 for a conventional cap. The type 4, on the right, has the same upright handle as your type 5, the other 2 are cocobola and more conventionally shaped. Let me know if you have any interest:

Re: Newest Hand plane flea market find
They guy I bought a Stanley #4 from Monday had a Stanley #40 scrub plane. I could have taken it for $10. It looked to be in great shape, wood all there. I didn't realize these are worth quite a bit more, at least on the bay. He said he be back next week so if he still has it, I'll pick it up. I don't think I have a use for it, but could pass it on for sure.
