An interesting hand plane
I picked up a plane like this yesterday at the flea market for $3. I'd never seen one before. Apparently made by Sargent, in the late 50's and 60's. All aluminum casting, with a short 4 sided/edged iron. What little info I've found so far says they don't work very well. I will try it some day. :)
I bet Ed is familiar with it and has some comments he can make....Ed?
At worst, it looks pretty neat on my shelf.

You Mainland tool junkies are so lucky. Here in Hawaii there is no such thing as finding a cool tool at a flea market or garage sale, but then we also don't have snow. I guess it's a trade off! I love seeing the things you folks find.

I have never had the pleasure of using one of these guys, but the whole concept seems wrong. The blade is so small in surface area and the frog has so little support, that it seems the blade would be very unstable. I had a big Stanley #6 (18") in aluminum for a while, and using it on light colored wood it would leave black marks. Stanley made one batch of the planes in a couple of sizes and it took them 25 years to sell them off.
Speaking of Stanley, here is their answer to that plane:

Good find, fun for the shelf

This is somewhat embarrassing maybe part of being on the wrong side of 60. I went to my plane drawer to get a sharp plan to join a back for a new guitar and found a new looking Lie Nelson low angle jack plane. I have no idea when or where I got it. It sure was sweet to use.

That's certainly a nice tool to find!

Uh hem, John, that is the one I left in your shop the last time I visited. You can mail it back to me anytime. :)
Always nice to find something you never knew you had, isn't it.

Mystery solved looking at my OLF PMs. I bought it from someone on OLF when they had some kids Birthdays coming up. Going back to the messages I saw that it came with a hot dog. I will need to find and check out what that is.
