Re: #173 name this wood
I saw some Masur for sale on a website (that shall remain nameless) and they said that the brown spots/lines/teardrops whatever you call them are from where the tree heals itself from bird pecks.
I also just read a post from a guy in Norway (Masur grows in the Scadinavian countries) and he said that it is a genetically "sick" tree that some of the bark grows inward toward the center of the tree trunk, who to believe?

Re: #173 name this wood
I found this. While it does not answer your question, it appears that you can believe either or neither.
Masur Birch is not a particular species of birch, but is rather a grain figure that is most commonly seen in Downy Birch and Silver Birch. It is also sometimes known as Karelian Birch—with Karelia being a region between Finland and Russia. Once surmised to have been caused by the boring larvae of a certain beetle, Masur Birch in Norway has been shown to be hereditary, classifying the name of the variant as Betula pendula var. Carelica. Regardless of the exact cause and makeup of the peculiar grain pattern, the resulting figure and appearance is very similar to burl wood or birdseye maple, though of a different origin.

The guy fro Norway insisted that it is not caused by the larvae of a boring beetle, he states that he and some buddies of his grow masur in their back yards and have never seen the presence of larvae.

Perhaps you're thinking of Peckerwood?David L wrote:I saw some Masur for sale on a website (that shall remain nameless) and they said that the brown spots/lines/teardrops whatever you call them are from where the tree heals itself from bird pecks.
