Les Paul kit from Precision Guitar Kits

Post by yagon »

I’m considering building/assembling a Les Paul using a kit from Precision Guitar Kits (http://precisionguitarkits.com/). This will be my first build and I have a number of questions that I hope I can get some feedback on:
• How much time is involved in building / assembling such a kit?
• I’m reasonably ‘handy’, but I still have concerns about setting up the neck (nut, frets etc) so that it plays well. How difficult is it to setup the neck on one of these kits?
• Can anyone comment on the quality of the kits from Precision Guitar Kits?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

never used their kits so I can't speak about them. I have made a number of les Pauls and I used true gibson picks ups on both of them 1957 pick ups on one and P94s on the latest one. I like the P94 for that P90 sound in a standard humbucker rout.

Thanks for the feedback. I too like the P90 tone and plan on using P92's from Fralin, which are hum cancelling P90s in humbucker size.

I'm certainly not an expert on Electric stuff. I've built a couple of partscasters and that's about it.

I"ve seen the Precision Kit site, have no first hand experience with them.

Re; Pickups, I've heard good things about the new Golden Age pickups that stewmac is selling. I read one review that compared them favorably original gibson pickups. In fact I think Freeman used them in his Les Paul build (see elsewhere on this site).

Being a child of the 70's I love that Gibson sound. Sweetwater has Gibson pickups. They sound great. There are many good suppliers of pickups. Seymore duncans are also a good supplier. They also have a fantastic reference library of wiring diagrams,
I do know we have a rule about commercial websites but the info here is an exception. This link allows you to see any wiring diagram you can think of.

use it as needed .

The precision guitar kits have a good reputation on the mylespaul forum.

I contacted the owner and he seemed to be pretty cool. I am thinking about one myself.

I have made a few electrics , I used auto lacquers on them. Hit them with a good sealer , tape off the bindings shoot the color then pulled the tape and shoot clear. Trying to scrape a finish to show bindings doesn't work well. I pull the tape as soon as the finish is dry to the touch. It comes up with less chipping. Build up with clear buff and polish.

I have 2 of their kits, both LP Jr's, a single and double-cut, and recommend them highly. Phil is a very nice guy.

Their fret work is impeccable. The neck joints are very tight-fitting, hence the name "precision". You don't need to worry about the neck angle, as it's already built-in. The hardest part for me was getting the neck to fit after applying the glue to the pocket. The joint is so tight, it almost didn't fit and had to be pressed in with a vise (maybe i used too much glue?).

Other than that, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Regards.

PS Since this is your first kit, you may want to consider a bolt-on. Precision also sells Tele kits. Also check out USA Custom Guitars and Carvin for their bolt-on kits. I've built kits from both and their quality is top-notch.
