Sharpening chisels and block plane blades

Post by kencierp »

This is worth a look ---- Actually you don't even need the plate glass a piece MDF will be fine -- --- And YES!! its really this easy/simple -- makes you wonder what you were led to believe regarding how to get tools sharp -- I undersand that one of the high priced Luthier Schools spends a week on sharpening a chisel and block plane blade--- NO JOKE!!
You'll need to sign in -- there is no charge -- once signed in click on the plate glass sharpening video to the right of the viewing window.

At the open house Todd Stock gave a good hands on demo on sharpening. Between the links Ken posted and this you will find a system that willdo the trick for you. A sharp chisel is a tool , a dull chisel is an accident waiting to happen

May Dad always said there is nothing more dangerous or useless than a dull tool. Think about that.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

"Double Bevel Sharpening" is a short but precise book available from Brian Burns. Maybe his method is overkill, but once mastered it is just as quick as any other method more accurate than many - so worth a look. www.lessonsinlutherie.com. $12 for the book I think.

I can testify to that. Kept me off the golf course for 2 weeks when a dull chisel sliced my thumb.
Possibly as much a dull mind as a dull tool.

Yeah, Ken! I can attest to the excellence of that methodology... been doing it for years that way, even before I could spell Lootheeyer. :-)

I've been using the Scary Sharp method for a bunch of years.

Pretty much the same as some of you have outlined. Various grits of emory paper glued on to glass plate. Gets my chisels and planes scary sharp!

I get good results using Japanese water stones, I bought them from Lee Valley about twenty years ago to sharpen knives.
