Jumbo First Build

Post by Snaglpuss »

Not really a J200 more like a J100

I wanted something with low bling and I hate the open Moustache bridge.

Indian Rosewood sides and back, Sitka spruce top, Cedar bracing, Mahogony neck,
Ebony fingerboard, bridge and head veener, Curly Maple truss rod cover.
Grover tuners, bone nut and bridge pins, modified Tusq saddle.
Electronics are Fishman Prefix Plus T.
Nitro Lacquer finish.

Still need to lower the action a little at the nut, I broke down and ordered some nut files that I just got today.

Sounds pretty good, like a Gibson should. Nice sound through a Fender Vibro Champ XD tube amp,
will try it out next week at a gig with a Fender Accoustasonic amp.

Snags, it looks very nice. Cool build. I'm with you, I don't like those mustaches either.
Well done.

100, 200... Whatever it takes! Either way it still looks awesome. And I agree, Bob, not a fan of the mustache either!

Well done, Snaglpuss! How's it sound?

I lowered the action at the nut today with my new StewMac nut files.
Expensive but certainly make the job easier than using a welding torch cleaner set as nut files.

As to the sound- I'm liking it more and more. Today I restrung my Gibson EC-30 Blues King Electro
so I could compare them both with new strings.
They are two different guitars for sure. The Gibson is Maple body with Maple neck. The sound on the Gibson
has a narrower sound range and is not as resonant as this new one. I also played a new Maple Gibson J200 at Guitar Center this week to see the sound difference. I was kind of disappointed in the J200 Maple it sounded kind of "dull".
This Jumbo has a full sound but it is a tight sound not all over the place if that makes any sense.
Sounds like a Gibson not like a Martin.
I wanted this to be the strummer I've been looking for. I'm glad I picked to build in Rosewood not Maple.
I'm going to use it next week at a gig and that will be a better test I think.

Looks great snag! Did you make that bridge yourself? My first will be a Gibson jumbo as well.

Yes I made the bridge myself.
I copied it from my EC30 Blues King Electro (predecessor to current J185).
I really like the look of the bridge.
I took a photo underlayed it into AutoCad, drew the shape over the photo and scaled it to the
right size.
If you want I could send you a full size PDF or a CAD file if you want to use one of these on a build.

Ya a PDF would be helpful. Give me something to go by when I design the bridge for my j185. I don't want to use a regular Martin style bridge. I don't think it would look right plus I want wider string spacing 2 3/16 or 2 1/4. The one you made looks so perfect I wasn't sure if you made it or if you bought it.

Going to try to attach pdf of the bridge to this post.
There is a 2x2 square drawn along with the bridge on the pdf.
The square is so you can check that you printed to scale.
Check printer settings- scale at no scale or 100%, not fit to page.
Bridge has 2 3/16 " string spacing.

I would definitely like that PDF file. That is an awesome looking guitar. And I found ALL of my builds have sounded better than the "original" and it's not just my builder's pride many of my friends have told me and people I don't know when I do festivals have said so as well. I will never buy another "manufactured" guitar for myself.
