Very cool.

One of my instructors from school (Steve Rossow) was one of the ones behind the Bett's Strad replica's. A doctor had scanned his own violin while in the hospital one day which struck his interest of scanning violins. He had gotten John Waddle involved, which led to Steve as well. Steve was the one behind taking the scans apart, and using them to draw up the individual pieces in the CNC.

That who ordeal made quite a splash in the violin world, as they were the first ones to ever scan a real Strad. The Bett's was borrowed from a museum somewhere (I forget where) during a holiday and they were able to scan it. When I was still in school I had picked some info from Steve and joked about when they were going to get their hands Strad cello. When Bernard Greenhouse passed away, his Strad Cello went up for auction and set the world record sale at 6mil dollars. Turns out, while this cello was in limbo, they had already gotten their hands on it and scanned it, so at some point in time there were be Strad replica cellos as well.

The first Bett's violin sale was to a woman in London for $34,500. I would assume the Cello would go for something like $60,000. The high price is due part to the fact that it actually takes longer to build the replica, because they pay close attention to all of the inconsistencies, as their tolerance for difference is extremely tight.

Pretty cool stuff mixing these vintage/antique instruments with modern tech.
