finish experiment Nitro and filler

I used the LMI filler for this guitar. It is a 00-12 fret. I also use the MinWax Nitro . I applied the filler with a credit card and hope for a good payback . I use the Pore O Paq but did find the a friendly filler. LMI did a good job with it. It didn't dry so fast and had a bit of work time. As you can see I masked off the back purfling strip , then worked the filler in first with the grain then across. Dried to touch in about 10 minutes. I will sand that filler off tomorrow and allow a dry shrink time.

After about 10 min I sprayed the top. I was surprised at the quality of the spray pattern. I gave this 1 light coat and was able to sand it in about 2 hr with 320 on my random orbital. After that I sprayed 2 coats about 20 min apart . I can see this is building a nice coat . Deft never did this so I am at this point giving MinWax a rating of 4 pickguards out of 6. I like the melt in of the coats and it is looking decent. I will post more after the leveling process.

the Halo in the finish is actually the area as it was drying. I took the pic right after the spray , once dry the halo appearance disappeared

This is most interesting. I'd finished two guitars with Deft spray satin lacquer and I was very pleased with both. Always willing to try better products. It looks like the Minwax is a gloss finish. Can I assume that whatever properties the gloss version shows will also prevail in the satin versions?

Meanwhile, this is a most interesting thread. Thanks for sharing.

sprayed the sides and back and again pleasantly surprised on the spray quality. I kept the can moving and about 8 in off the surface. Got good coverage and it covered about double that of the deft. I would rate this as good as behlen

Looks like I'm trying Minwax spray lacquer for my next project. Fits right in, Deft all used up.

I used the semi gloss for a while in touch ups I just figured with the kits , this is an offering that gives good results without a lot of outlay
