French Polish The Neck?

Post by twenty2late »

After looking at a bunch of FP posts here, it sounds like a lot of folks only FP the bodies and use tru-oil for the necks. Does anyone truly recommend one way over the other? Are there any draw backs to either method (specifically on the necks)? I tru-oiled my last 2, and plan to FP the 2 on the bench in a couple weeks and I'm ready to make my plan!!! Thanks.

I have FP'd the head but not the neck. IMHO, FP isn't durable enough for the expected wear on the neck. Since I started building again a few years ago, it has been tru-oil, spar varnish or lacquer for me.

I am all nitro but agree FP is not durable on the neck
Wipe on poly and tru oil are good alternatives over Nitro

Excellent advice! Thank you very much. I do like the feel of the tru-oil on my other guitar neck...so I will go that route. Looking forward to French polishing the bodies though! I'm not quite ready to attempt nitro at-home, and sending them out for finish isn't within the budget at the moment.

I use polyurethane on the neck and the faceplate. It's a lot more durable. I fp the box. IMO, shellac brings out that "3D" depth of the wood grain and figure.
