Mike - I use water to raise the grain. This is really helpful with soft woods like spruce and even Mahogony. Before pore filling with zpoxy, I thoroughly clean the wood with naphtha. I'll keep cleaning with naphtha and paper towels until the towels aren't picking up any dust or dirt.

I just dampen the wood over night to raise the grain. Do the final sanding and clean the wood with naphtha.

I use naphtha , mineral spirits and acetone , then seal and fill. I still use the paste filler ( pore o paq ). I never had luck with the zpoxy. Use what you find works the best for you. We all have our favorites.

Depends on the work.....If you have wood bindings you must be careful not to drag color from the darker woods out and stain it and some woods do not require much in the way of oil removal. Typically I use DA for a wipe down prior to finish. A good isolation coat is worthwhile insurance on anything oily like Cocobolo.

I use naphtha and sometimes alcohol, depending on what I need to clean. I use Aquacoat to pore fill. It takes a few coats, esp because I use thin layers, but it does a superb job before french polishing.
