behlen vinyl sealer compatibility with paint?

Post by gnomemade »

I've been slowly working on finishing a kit guitar. My plans for finishing are using purple transtint for the top and dark vintage maple for the sides and back. I'd like to do a thin faux binding, mainly to hide some glue lines from too much veneer glue  I was planning on using behlen vinyl sealer before spraying behlen nitro. For the fake binding, I was thinking of an off white paint but I don't know if I should do it over or under the vinyl sealer and don't know if I should use an latex or oil. Any suggestions?

Your painted bindings should go over the sealer. Latex will not work, oil is a maybe. It would be best to do them with a lacquer. You can easily tint a small amount of your own by adding a pigment to some clear lacquer. I use Mixol pigments, you can get them at Woodcraft. Another option may be to use Testors model paint, but that should be tested for compatibility first.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....
