Sand Paper grades

Post by Ben-Had »

With all the advice going on here when someone says to use paper in the following order: 150, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800 how is one to know if those numbers are P-grade or CAMI? I would assume this could have a huge impact on finish if your using P-600 (coarser) and should be using C-600 (finer)? Thanks.

I would assume (only for me would I assume, not others) that if it doesn't have a P in front, it's a USA standard. I can't base that on anything other than gut hunch.
So it could be way off.
But here's a table I found and use to compare the standards.

What I mean is, P600 is coarser than c-600. So if some one just says use 600 it could make a difference on the finish process depending on "which" type 600 you use.

Ben, on Wikipedia (guess we have to take their site with a grain of salt sometimes - but I think they're right on this one) they say that the C grits are standard in the USA, and P grits are standard in Europe.
This is the page I looked at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandpaper
So it would depend on the author's location as to what standard they were using.
