getting that perfect shine takes work and information

Post by tippie53 »

when you get into finish work there is so much you don't know.
A Prep
if you short cut prep you create a lot of work and you won't get that perfect shine
B What is the process
Learn about sand papers and how to create the flat level surface
I no longer use micro mesh my paper of choice is now all Assilex yes it isn't cheap but it lasts a long time and
is a much higher end finish paper
C buffing
I use the arbor with a 1/3 hp motor and dual action hand buffer/polisher
on the wheel I use Menzerna medium finish final finish

on the hand buffer ( do all my final with these ) Menzerna heavy but Groits correcting cream buffing and polish compounds then I use maquires 204 and 3M finese it and hand glaze
watch the link for the detailing to finese the perfect shine.

my prep is
seal with shellac ( flake and everclear 1 lb cut )
aqua coat 3 o 4 applications sand after 2
seal shellac
finish is
nitro 35% to 50% depending on temp and RH
thinner is 90% thin 10% retarder

then heat lacquer to about 90 degrees heat lamp on body

use a devilbiss gun with 1.0 needle 20 psi

6 coats on day on allow a few days
level sand with 360 assilex
then 3 more coats at 35% thin
allow 2 weeks
level sand and you can wet sand with assilex
I start with the block they give you.
Touch off with 360 and 600
then work up to 1500
buff wheels may have to go back for tough up sanding
I use a domet and flannel wheel
medium to get through the sanding scratches then finish and super finish on the wheel
on the hand buffer you need to learn to read the surface and what comound you need when
also what pads you need to use. THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME there is a color code

I use a rotisserie this eliminates runs and keeps the body under the heat even

I've got a 4 stage Fuji system HVLP. What would your mixture be (lacquer/thinner/retarder) ??

Thanks
