Modification to a D28 to make it a 12 string

Post by tippie53 »

I do many Martin conversions but this one is a different challenge. I will show the steps involved on this one. I am converting a 6 string D28 to a D 42 12 string. I will also be doing a 45 conversion along with it and will put that in its own section.
I was at the ASIA Symposium last week , and my customer wants that John Denver sound. I also have a guild 12 string in the shop for a reset so I took some information off that to work on this conversion. Alan Carruth was gracious and we discussed this project. We both agree that the top needs a little more mass for that ringing tone the older Guilds were noted for.
The top is red spruce and while the bracing is a standard X brace with the larger plate and a 3rd tone bar. The braces are all protein glued. HHG or Fish.
Since this is a special guitar the customer also asked for snakewood binding. I am looking forward to the end result.
Here are the pics.
