Wood Identification

Post by Diane Kauffmds »

I got the old Silvertone guitar today, that I'll be working on. What surprised me was that the entire guitar is solid wood; the back and sides are birch. I expected a birch top, but it doesn't look like birch. I was very surprised to find this top with a lot of beautiful bear claw or waterfall figure (I'm not good at identifying spalting patterns).

I took some photos with my cellphone. Is this spruce? I think the guitar was built in 1959, so it's well aged.

not spruce
most likely a maple or birch ply check to see if it is a laminate look at the end grain at the sound hole
