If I m not mistaken, Martin shoots for 1/2" total on a steel string guitar. That is made jp of a 3/8" bridge with 1/8" of saddle above the bridge. I had one of their tenor guitars and researched that one and Martin likes 7/16" above the top for this style of guitar. A taller saddle can put strain on the bridge edge as the saddle tries to tip towards the nut, and I saw one where the bridge had cracked right there.

Martin uses a spec no to exceed .180 in over the bridge.
