12 string conversions

Post by Skarsaune »

There's a D35 conversion for sale over at AGF that John did....

From the specs, I see the neck and top were both replaced.

Neck I can understand, to change to a 6.

Was the top changed to lighten up the bracing & bridgeplate from a 12 string design to a 6? Easier than redoing all the bracing with the top on, I'm sure.

There's a '69 Martin D12-20 in the AS-IS section over at Elderly Instruments.

Seeing as it needs a neck reset anyways, that's halfway to a conversion.....

Somehow I'm in the position of having (slightly) more money than time, so putting a $1000 project on the shelf for when I get some round to-it's is somehow appealing. Even though the current project load is approaching overwhelming.

In my previous hobbies in the (british) vintage motorcycle world, there's a certain admiration for a properly done "special",ie a TriTon, putting a Triumph motor into a Norton featherbed frame. Choppers, not so much. "Properly done" is a big part of it. I personally can appreciate a cleanly executed chopper or special or meticulously restored original.

The guitar world is much more dedicated to originality, to the point that resprays devalue a guitar for a collector.

Talk to me about the conversion. Talk me out of taking one on, lol.
