Sanding near the neck joint

Post by lyricalgeek »

Anyone have a tip or trick on sanding the upper bout where it meets the neck. I attach my necks before starting finishing and I'm having trouble sanding close to the neck heel. I always get a thin strip of pore filler and finish that I can't reach without sanding against the grain.

When building classical guitars, I used to use scrapers to get at that area. Scrapers can be made in any size and shape to address the neck/body joint finishing. Goes without saying that what can be done before the neck/sides are joined should be.

Have you tried finishing before installing the necK?

I plan on finishing before attaching the neck on my next build, but I'm past that point on my two current guitars, so wanted to see if anyone had recommendations. I've had some luck wrapping sandpaper around a credit card.

Try using adhesive backed sandpaper and trim it up to the edge of your sanding block.
