Martin and glue

There are many misconceptions out there about the glue martin used through the years. My Friend Dick Boak sent me this information
this is to the best of his recollection :

When I arrived in '76 Martin was still using hide glue on all ³releasable"
seams. White glue (from my recollection this was Peter Cooper #1 PVC White
Glue) was being used for bridges, bracing, ribbon, top and back center
seam, etc. Glue joints that they didn¹t want to release easily.

John-Did you go to Google and read about Cooper? Never knew glue had a history like that. Interesting that Martin used his white glue for the top and back centers. I'm just switching from Titebond to hide glue to see if I can eliminate the glue swelling, or creep, or whatever it is that can make the seam show over time. I've never had a Titebond seam release, but they often show a slight , visible change of level of some kind.--Bob

No I didn't Bob. Here is what I can tell you
I don't use tite bond for much any more.
As for hide glue. Frank Ford talked me into trying the franklin hide glue in a bottle and I have to admit it seems to be as strong or stronger than the HHG on the joints I tested but I feel it takes a good 12 hr clamp time.
I still like fish glue also and use both.

when I do use tite bond I do like it for the fretboard. It is a large joint and I don't think the glue here is that big a deal. I do like the release of hide over fish and both clean up well.

I do pretty much 12 hr on all the animal glue The manufacturer say 6 to 8 but I let things set over night when I can

I've been clamping for 24 hours with the hide and torrified. Is it necessary to clamp for that long, with that combination?

Curious about the Franklin Hide glue in bottle. Have you tried it for braces, etc? Amazon has it for 5.69 a bottle, I'll probably pick up a bottle to check it out.

I picked up some cold hide glue few days ago with the intention of using it where I need more working time. So far, I like the HHG, for the bracing. The braces don't slip around as much. I always make sure to dry fit, including clamping, and I have everything ready to go.

yes I Have made 2 guitars with this that I kept. So far so good.
I do allow a 24 hr period on torrified tops just for my comfort.
