Back centre strip (reinforcement of joint or no)

Post by Coach »

My question pertains to strengthening the centre joint on the back. I'm not 100% confident that I got a perfect centre joint on the guitar I'm working on now (the wood is now too thin to redo). I will of course add the spruce joint reinforcement on the inside.

Now on the outside, suppose I inlay a .25" wide centre strip along the joint. Will that extra gluing area now connecting the 2 plates increase the the strength of the joint? I'm thinking the inlay depth will be less than half of the plate thickness. And it'll be quartered Padauk.

The addition of a center backstrip would reinforce the joint to a certain extent. But the joint made by the glued backplate is stronger than any wood surrounding it. If you're concerned with strength, I would buy a strip of wood with the grain perpendicular to the seam of the joint. This is an example of what I mean:
