Question about wood binding with plastic side purfling

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

Hi Gang
This is a question because I have never tried it/done it before so looking for some helpful input.

I have some plastic bw purfling material left over from my archtop guitar project. I'd like to use it perhaps on the new OM I've started.

My question is this; I know I can glue the plastic purfling to the edge of my wood binding using the special adhesive I used on the archtop, but can I then bend the binding in my machine and expect the purfling to make it through, remain attached to the binding and not melt or deform???

I saw how easy it was to use heat from a hair dryer to soften the purfling to bend it where needed so wonder how it will do under a heat blanket at 275 degrees.

If anyone has done this or tried it I'd love to hear about it.
If need be ill glue up a strip and do a test bend and see what happens.

It MAY be possible to bend and push this BW .020 purfling into the channel under the binding during glue up, but I know how almost impossible it is to do this with the fiber or the wood purfling strips.

Thanks for you help, comments and or insights.

the plastic will bend on its own. I suggest using duco cement to glue in the binding and the purfling. Duco will stick wood to wood and wood to plastic

Thanks John.
Are you saying dont pre glue the side purfling to the binding but to glue in the side purfling along with the binding, that it should conform to the curves?
