According to John and others I have read, you want the strings about 1/2" above the soundboard. 3/8" in the bridge and 1/8" in the saddle are good proportions. Martin keeps 3 (if I recall correctly) bridge thicknesses on the workbench and installs the one that gives about 1/8" of saddle.
