Highly figured Chechen/Bearclaw Sitka Herringbone OM

I'm starting a new commission. This one is an OM with Chechen sides/back, with a bearclaw sitka top. I'm doing herringbone on this one.

I've already thicknessed the wood, joined the top, and installed the herringbone rosette. I'll get the back joined tomorrow then I'll install the backstrip.

It's hard to photograph bearclaw. The top is much nicer than the photo.

Diane

Is that what the back wood will look like under a finish? It is quite lively

Wildly colored wood there Diane. Should be killer (do the young people still say that)? :)

It should look very close to this, but with more depth from the shellac. I put naphtha on it to show the grain. It's definitely some crazy wood.

I don't know anything about chechen except the name. What can you say about what it might sound like? Bruce.

The person who commissioned this guitar wants a soundport, hence my interest in them of late. I designed, laid out, and cut the port today, this one a bit more decorative than the ellipse I put in the quilted Honduran mahogany build.

It may look large, but in reality, the area of the openings are no larger than the area of the port I put in the mahogany. The sound worked out really well with my first port, with nice projection, while preserving the dynamics; I didn't see a need to make it larger. So, each of the larger openings in this one are 1" x 1/2" ellipses and the small openings are 1/2" x 1/4" .

Soundports are fascinating, thanks for posting this. And the grain on the Chechen looks really nice.
