Dan
I won't know til the instrument is finished and I can start working on the relief. I like the engineering of it, and it is absolutely the right length. They are $40, a bit more expensive, but nothing is too good for my baby, right??

Boy - time is limited during a busy summer. Too much boating to do
1) Mark the heel to where I need to trim and use a chisel to remove 90%. One side a little more than other for the centerline, and both of them tipped down a little for the height
2) looks pretty close
3) some flossing to make it just right - sandpaper with a packing tape backing

1) Glue on a piece for the diamond volute
2) Cut the acute angle at the tip of the volute - not all the way down just yet
3) Shape the neck at fret #9 and . . .

1) . . . and fret #1, after thinning this end of the board by over .1"
2) Connect the two shaped section with a spoke shave - It always reminds me of a blue crab waiting to spring at me
3) Both sides roughed out - keep that line

1) This is a neck holding jig I made from a scrap glue-lam from a nearby construction site. It is 1-3/4" thick and 12" wide and it has holes for clamping and for measuring thickness at various frets
2) Start to form the volute - seat of the pants here
3) The hardest part to visualize - now I have to lower the area around it, so I have cut into it

1) Then take the level down to that of the head piece
2) Mostly there
3) Sand with a block to get rid of glue residue

1) A couple of washes of shellac and it looks pretty good. Look how little of that larger piece I glued on is left. I could have picked a piece with a better grain match
2) Now to the heel - draw the shape and cut off the waste
3) Rough out the shape with my cute little round bottom shave a friend made out of a very hard wood (lignum vitae?) for me
Grandson is here for a week, so not much will happen. Let me know if I am doing something wrong, crazy, or too labor intensive

1) Work the heel with a rasp and some files
2) Neck, head, and heel are shaped and almost ready for sandpaper
3) Drop fill the fretboard with CA
