Oak ladder braced jumbo

Post by ruby@magpage.com »

I am getting started on #5 - a ladder braced Gibson J-185 in oak and red spruce. It will have some fancy decorations and I am just getting started doing the bracing after finishing the fretboard. I am using Pearloid (MOTS) for binding and fretboard overlay:

I love doing this stuff.

Since you're doing oak AND ladder bracing, I assume you're a fan of Hans Brentrup's guitar building. If you're not, you should be.

I have been conferring a bit with Haans. He just published a small book on building Larson-style guitars, both X braced and ladder braced, and the information is invaluable - the publication date is April 2015. Actually I have been talking to 3 well known ladder brace guys and am pretty blown away by the generosity with their knowledge.

This is a really fun fun fun project. There is more thinking than building involved.
