I built a pre-1929 maple/sitka Gibson L-00 with 14 frets and a conventional 3-3/4"soundhole. A couple of instruments later I built another, this one a Nick Lucas Special copy, 12 fret mahogany/sitka. It's body is an extra 3/4" deeper and the soundhole was 3-5/16" if I recall - I don't have it any longer. I could still get my (smallish) hand into it just fine.

When compared to the maple one, the mahogany is not as bright, but the volume is similar - both pretty good.

I have played that Nick alongside a Circle Strings copy of a Nick, also mahogany and 13 frets, with a larger soundhole. The balance was close to the same, but the volume was more subdued. Note the Circle Strings (bottom picture) appears to have a bigger soundhole than the maple one. It was pretty loud.

It will be exiting to hear what impact it has on the sound, that's for sure! :)
