How do you line up diamond inlays?

here is how I do it.
I use 3 mail lines the center and to place the double inlays a line that follows the taper 7/16 in from the ends. The a center line on each fret that gets inlay , keep it simple.
1: what size bit do you use for the 5 pilot holes? I'm using blue paua inlays from StewMac and the points are not rounded.
2: my fretboard is not tapered, and I'd intended to bind the fretboard as well (using flamed maple binding I purchased from LMI which is .08" thick. Should I taper and bind the board first before doing the inlay?

yes taper and bind first .
I use a 1/32 bit for most inlays the delicate stuff I will go to a .020
