Signing the Top?

How do you all sign the top? Ballpoint Pen? Pencil? Sharpie? Is there anything that could possibly bleed through the top and become visible from outside? What ink is safe? Will pencil fade over time?

Lots of beginners questions there! I've been wondering what I should be using...

Pencil. Just did a re-fret on a 1954 Martin D-18 and the pencil lines outlining the finger brace slots was still visible. So pencil must last a while.

I've used pencil, but it didn't work very well on redwood....since it is a softer wood.

All 3 of mine so far have my blood on the top. But I signed the last one with a sharpie. I'll have to re-think that though.
