Does anyone recommend applying the titebond or whatever glue you choose - to the binding itself rather than the channel?

Dave,
I wouldn't recommend it. It seems it would be difficult to get enough glue on there (dripping off, messy) so you got really good contact with some squeeze out. Now on plastic, it might work okay as that glue is not going to run as much.
Either way, I don't see what the advantage would be....
What were you thinking?

the key is to get a good bed of glue for the binding to set into. With wood binding , it helps to break the inside corner to help it seat better
