Someone said that he thought a shooting board along the side would be a good idea.

It wouldn't have to be a shooting board - sandpaper on a block or a file would do it. The result would be a narrower freeboard and when you cut your nut slots keeping the clearance from the sides of the board you would end up with a narrower spacing. Not a bad thing, just different.
