Five Planes

Post by rcnewcomb »

My neighbor is moving out of state and graciously gave me wood, hardware, storage boxes, and 5 hand planes.

One was a Stanley 5 1/2 with the dates:
Mar 25 02
Aug 19 02
Apr 19 10

The largest one was a Stanley No 7

I now get to research how to bring these up to standard.

You have benefitted from a generous person. I've decided to hand thickness and flatten the plates for my kit guitar, and just spent almost $200 on a Stanley no. 5 1/2 jack plane (best all-around) and a no. 7 jointer plane. Looks like you have a no. 4 smoother, which I inherited from my father. Congratulations!

I would just sharpen and use them. Nice set there, everything you'll ever need.

That's an amazing gift! I love these old planes too. I bought a flea-market Bailey No. 4 made in Canada, Type 11 from about 1910. It is part of the complicated Stanley/Bailey story. But while I have the ear of plane lovers, I also have two Woden planes from the UK, one an original Woden from the early 1960s, and one a "Record Woden" from after Record bought the company. They are lovely planes to use - British woodworker Paul Sellers talks about them here:

https://paulsellers.com/2014/05/planes- ... work-with/

He has another blog post about them too if you search. There used to be an excellent web site dedicated to Woden tools, but it has unfortunately gone dark. I am on the lookout for a Woden-branded 2" lever cap on the off chance anyone comes across one somewhere. Bruce W.
