Moxon Vises
I wrote up a page on Moxon vises for the local guild. IMO a really great tool. http://www.pegasusguitars.com/the-moxon-vise.html

It looks like if you have the guitar in the vice so that the neck joint is up and close to level with the top of the jaws - like you would have when working on that area - that the lower bout will hit the lower vice handle. Could you fasten it to the end of the bench with a couple of vertical clamps to avoid that, or install a flat board under the back jaw that could be clamped to the bench? Nicely done with the curved jaws.
Something like the ends of this one with holdfasts/clamps at the end

Re: Moxon Vises
Great job, Bob. Mine is much simpler and accomplishes the same thing. Take a look at http://www.wellsguitars.com/Articles/Guitar_Holder.php
I have been using this since about 1995 and have never cracked or broken any instrument.

Re: Moxon Vises
Ed, I have no issues using the vise in the dimensions I made it in for the work that I do.. I don't do repairs, so I never have a need to clamp up a guitar with the neck on it.There are far more elegant versions out there and simpler ones like Sylvan's (no criticism meant Sylvan). What ever works. -Bob

Re: Moxon Vises
Ed,
I reread your post and missed what you meant the first time. I have different jigs that I use for working on the dovetail or neck joint, so I never have the guitar down in the vise like that. To use it like that I would have to move it out from the table to clear the vise. Easily done. I would probably want to make the vice wider too, with the pipes further apart.-Bob

I have a twin screw end vice that I convert easily for guitars. The screws are 20" apart and that is almost perfect for being able to angle the body so one of the sides is up

Just 1/4" plywood with 2 3/4"square pieces to allow for the bend, like you did. I put some foam pipe insulation on the screws for padding

Ed, That's the nice version of a Moxon. You are lucky to be able to have a workbench like that. I just don't have the room, or a nice bench, so I improvise. Enjoy your woodwork.-Bob

Bob,
Thanks of posting this and the link to your instructions. I just finished making one. It seems to hold the guitar well. Much more secure than what I was doing before.

Re: Moxon Vises
I wanted to thank you again for this post and detailed plans. I built mine right after you posted this, and put it aside. Now I finally got to use it.
I am doing some final touch up work on the sides of my build. The last time I worked on the sides I had the box in my cradle that was awkwardly clamped in a small vise. Made me really nervous. The cradle is nice for some things, but it didn’t hold the box well when working on it.
So, I got it out yesterday and the vise worked wonderfully. It seemed to hold the guitar securely and safely. I felt much more comfortable working the guitar sides. So, much better than what I had before.
Thanks again.
