I've been looking for a used pressure cooker for my steam needle. My old steam generator gave up the ghost. I got a wagner steamer, but it doesn't generate the pressure needed, allowing a lot of hot water to come out.

Apparently, people are hanging onto their older pressure cookers. I can't find one for under $25, plus I need a hot plate. So. I'm going "high tech".

I just bought a 3 qt instant pot from Amazon for $59. Actually the 6 qt is also $59, but the smaller suits me. I have an Instant Pot Ultra, so I removed the valve cover to test, and it spouts strong steam. I figure it has a plethora of safeties as well, so it works for me.

If any of you (or your significant other) own an older Instant Pot, you could upgrade to the Ultra, and use your older pot for steaming. The Ultra is a fantastic pressure cooker.

I wanted to make one like yours, but couldn't find a cheap used pressure cooker. People are hanging onto them around here. I've been looking for 6 months. But, I'll double check your fittings, because I need to connect to the steam release, which is pretty much identical to the ones used on stove top cookers.

I have the stewmac needle. I have the setup from my old steam generator, but I have to attach to the cooker.

You're right John. It's the steam release.

I was thinking the float valve was the pressure release. It isn't. On mine, that one ( the little round one next next to the circle in Diane's picture ) is just to lock the lid when there is pressure. The safety pressure release valve is the one you take off to attach the hose. The manual states that there is an internal cut-off switch to cut heating if the pressure is too high. So it has a safety feature but not a traditional vent that pops and releases steam if the pressure is too high. The only way out for steam is through the stem you are attaching the hose to or if you manually depress the float valve.

Thanks for this thread. My instapot has been sitting idle as it is a neat gift but I doesn't interest me in the cooking department. My current method for steam is Mr. Coffee espresso maker stem and it just spurts hot water mostly.

I use an espresso maker from a yard sale. Surgical tubing fits nicely over the steam vent for heating milk. Before that I used a tea kettle with a wood stopper that the surgical tubing fit into. The espresso machine is much faster to heat the water.-Bob

Been looking for an expresso machine too, but they're hard to find locally as well.

The instant pot is coming today. I have one for cooking and I tested the setup. It works really good, so I'm going to use it.
