Shooting Board

So I finally got to spend some time in the shop yesterday. I broke down and bought a shooting plane, as I want to switch my joining process to a hand plane. And with the plane, I had to build a shooting board. I used MDF as the base, which I can bolt to my workbench. The plane is a Veritas from Lee Valley Tools, and I got their track to run the plane along. All in all, it works pretty smooth. I'll try joining some plates this weekend.

Thanks all...I probably shouldn't admit that I built it twice, huh? I never seem to get anything right the first time!

What's the length of the plane?

Hello turnertj,

That looks like a fine shooting board you have there. I have a question about the angle you have chosen to build the shooting board at. Reading the specs of the plane shows the plane blade is skewed 20 degrees and it looks like you have removed that effect by raising the heal and lowering the toe of the shooting board. Is there a reason for that? The reading I have done indicates when planing end grain skewing the plane in relation to the wood will decrease the risk of tear out. I am not certain if this is as significant with smaller pieces of wood. I mean no disrespect, I am curious as to why you angled the shooting board. Thanks,
Jim

Most excellent. That's another jig I've been putting off making but just bought the MDF for it this week.
