I use a Veritas low angle jointer http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=105 for jointing the plates. I have found with a 25° blade that even when very sharp I can get a little tear out on plates if they are at all figured; even bear claw spruce. Buying a 38° blade made all the difference in the world. I also have a 50° blade but have not used it yet.

You made a wise purchasing decision. Brand new,
from a reputable source and full warranty and support.
Good move, I say.

I wonder if one of these planes could be used to thickness a top.
Or would that be better done with a low angle #4 smoother??

I agree. You can get them on ebay but most likely will find they have been tinkered with and will require feddeling. Hours in some cases of getting them right. I have some lie Nelson's and they are not ready right out of the box. They all have to be tuned up, but they are the best you can get out of the box.
I use a smoother for tops but the low angle you bought will work quite well.

Are you done thicknessing with the plane?
How did it turn out. Any tips or warnings?
