Great solution from scrap. Glad to see that someone else knows what a holdfast is. Is your front jaw for cabinetmaking a piece of 2X material?

Hi Ed,

The vise is newly hatched, so no front jaw yet. When the need arises, 2x lumber or maybe a good scrap will do.

Holdfasts are the most amazing devices. So simple and so so useful. Those are the gramercy holdfasts from tools for working wood. For those of you who haven't tried them, drill a few 3/4" holes in your bench and get a pair. Bench must be 1.5" or thicker.

This is actually easier to build and much more flexible. The pipe clamps are 15 1/2" wide. That distance prevents any guitar except the very, very small ones from falling through to the floor.
I have used this one for 15 years or so. I have several around my shop!

Coincidentally I was building a vise this week too. Thought I'd post some pix since the design it is slightly different due to my bench isn't thick enough for screwing on pipe flanges and I wanted it easier to remove.

Thanks, Mitch! I used your photos to make one pretty much like yours. It'll get its first test in a week or so, but I'm sure it'll work out aces.
