I used to use it quite a bit before I had my thickness sander. It works very well, but ken said, make sure you have a good grip on whatever you are sanding, or you'll have missiles flying around the shop. I found that taking small passes instead of trying to hog it all off at once is a good 'best practice'.

It's hard to tell from the picture you linked, but one aspect I like of the luthiers friend is the bearing guided drum. The bearing drops into a hole in the jig, and you can use it for some light template guided sanding (i.e. making forms/molds, etc...) as well.

I think you can buy those at LMI...

I have the Robo Sander, but not the drill press table jig, cause, I have a THICKNESS SANDER!
ahem....sorry, I just got excited again about my sander.

I have the LF and use it for all sorts of stuff. Especially useful for making your own bridges from blanks, thicknessing nuts and saddles, milling out saddle slots, etc. Real time saver for me.
