Deep Throat Thickness Indicator?
I could use one right about now (before I close up the box on the re-top).
I know you can buy these for a small fortune, but I'm pretty sure I've run across pictures of home made versions that use inexpensive standard dial indicators.
Has anyone here made one? I'd like to see what you have...

Jim,
I just posted a month or two ago what I got from Woodcraft; digital outside calipers with a 6" reach.....under $35.
They work great, and although you can not reach all the way to the middle of a dred top or back, you can come close (reach in at the waist).

I got a dial indicator at Harbor Freight for $10 and tried to make my own, but these work just fine, and are plenty accurate enough..and, you can read it in fractions, decimals, and MM.
Check it out!!

Thanks Kevin,
Hmm.. Have you tried to use this on a built guitar? Does the handle fit in a sound hole?

A deep throat thickness caliper. I will look for the source, some luthier supply shop that is right on the tip of the tongue...

I haven't tried to put it in a sound hole yet. I think it would reach in a bit, at least up to the handle.
Dave found a good alternative to the high dollar metal deals....but my caliper is simple and fast.

It's easy to make your own. Here's mine made quick and dirty using scrap wood. Make the bottom arm thinner and without a base, and it should fit thru a sound hole.
