D28 Project Assistance

Hello Friends,

Some time ago I built a 000 12-fret and got a ton of help from many folks here. Recently I had someone GIVE me a project he gave up on. Its a martin D28 type kit where he finished the body and that's about it.

Here is the catch: He, one night after a few beers, decided to try to route out the mortis in the body for the neck joint. Well it is certainly botched up and he quit while realizing the disaster. So that is where we are at. The neck tenon doesn't yet fit down in the mortis as it is proud of the top about 1/4". You can see the pencil lines I traced while holding the neck tenon against the body.

One other issue I am not sure about is the front of the body's angle. Looking at it with the square shows the neck would be at a steep angle when fitted so I don't know how much of an issue this may be either.

Is this project worth attempting to complete with such issues?
If so, how would you guys approach working the neck joint from here?

As always, much appreciated.

can you get a better block pic?

Now to pre set the neck you will have to do some trimming to get the angle correct. Here is the video

take your time and feel free to call me if you need to

THanks. I assume you mean neck block? Here are some additional pics. Glad to take any shots/angles you would like to see.

once cleaned up the block will be fine.
get the basic info off the measurements and now you will know how to make the adjustments.

Please clarify, I am not sure what you mean by: "get the basic info off the measurements"?

Thanks for helping

This looks very do-able. You will have to clean up the edges of the mortice and try to get close to the right angle, then set the neck tipping it forward quite a bit. Medium sized hassle.

Just follow what John says

you need to refer to the neck setting vids I posted . That will be what you need to get the neck in there.

Check out John's neck setting videos on YouTube. There are 5, maybe 6 of them.

Speaking as a total novice (I'm in the middle of setting up my first neck), I think within reason almost anything is correctable with appropriate shims and creative adaptation. It's just a lot more work than it really ought to be.

OK following John's videos starting with #1.

I chamfered around the mortise and got it cleaned up. Also I flattened the top per the video.

Now looking at neck angle john has a 12-fret 000 in the video and is taking his first measurement right at the neck/body dovetail, then taking another over the bridge area using the straight edge.

Would I measure from the same places being its a D28? If so I am getting 3/16" at the neck joint and 7/16" rise above the bridge. (suggesting the angle is fairly steep as I presumed).

I think another issue is that the bottom of the tenon is hitting deep in the V of the dovetail. I think the "V" dimensions are all off because he tried to route this all out without some sort of template.

What to do?
