Bleaching wood

Post by hummingbird »

I've been thinking lately that it might be cool to bleach a fingerboard, bridge or back and sides. Anybody ever try this? Would it compromise the integrity of the wood at all? What would you use to do this?

Instead of bleaching a dark wood to a lighter color....and this might sound like a really "out there" idea, but try to be open minded...why not actually pick a lighter colored wood? I mean...there are so many options as far as wood choices, why would you try to drastically change a dark wood? I can understand adding stain to make a wood more even or slightly darker in color, but I do not understand bleaching mahogany until its the color of maple.
You asked about the integrity of the wood being compromised? The long term affects of bleaching the wood could be disastrous! I wouldnt do it unless you intended to stabilize the wood afterwards.
