Stew mac 000 kit: fretboard/nut help please

Post by pryde »

I am building a stewmac 000 kit and need some help with the fretboard cutting/fitting. Basically the manual says to cut the fretboard to 1-3/4" at the nut end and taper to 2-3/16" at the 12th fret.

The issue is that the current neck width is 1-7/8" at the nut, and the actual nut is already cut to this as well. Am I supposed to glue on a 1-3/4" fretboard then rasp the neck down to this width?

Would it be better to just trace the neck right onto the fretboard and cut it that way (witch wound then make it 1-7/8" and not 1-3/4" as stewmac says to cut it.

Those who have built the stewmac 000, how do you do this step? Thanks for the help!

I've got a Dread kit and I'm sure it's the same neck. Stewmac told me that the nut area is left rough and takes "quite a bit of carving" to finish it up.
