Truss rod fitting - Use Silicone or Epoxy or nothing?

Post by Mighty Magpie »

Before I glue on my fretboard I would welcome some advice re fitting the two way truss rod into the slot in the neck.

I want to do what I can to prevent the truss rod device rattling and it appears from reading historical posts that I should/could/can add either silicone caulking or epoxy to the slot to achieve that goal.

Forgive my ignorance but here in England we have an epoxy named “Araldite” which is a very strong adhesive. Is that the kind of thing that is meant when epoxy is referred to as above?

I realise that I want to ensure that the rods are still free enough to be turned by me for adjustment if needs be but should I actually glue the “nut” into the slot?

I imagine that the “nut” really needs to be able to “slide” along the cut out slot when the rod is adjusted but I’m not sure if I am correct in that belief or if it can be glued in place.

Many thanks for any advice,

Cheers,

Jim

I generally put a dab of Devcon cement at each end of the rod before I set it. A lot of folks use silicone caulking for doors and windows in the same manner. I know some use epoxy, but I like something with a bit of flexibility. Devcon cement is sort of a modified rubber cement and I use it because I have it on hand for other purposes but if I did not I would use silicone caulk.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....

the glue I use is simple tite bond. The glue isn't to hold the rod but act as a filler.

After my first guitar, in which I did not put anything in with the rod, and I had rattling later, I now put a dab of kitchen and bath chaulk at each end and one in the middle of the rod. (underneath). This has worked out well for me.
