Sneak Peek at No. 2

Post by David L »

No green eggs and ham, Sam I am, but how 'bout a wormy bearclaw for breakfast? Here's a partial look at the menu for my second attempt at building a guitar. First up is some bearclaw sitka.

Next we have some "wormy" figured white oak. Not much of a bookmatch, just the nature of the type of figure.

I am going to use purfling on the side as well as on the top and back, something like B/W or B/W/B with walnut binding. I am wondering if it matters if I use plastic or fiber purfling, the glue of chioce would seem to be titebond for the walnut binding but would that pose a problem with plastic purfling?

The wood looks cool. I like fiber or the wood purflings myself. Are you going to glue the side purflings to the bindings and bend them together?

Yes John, I'm thinking that's the way to go, side purfling (plastic or fiber) doesn't bend so well on that axis, especially on the curvy body of a OO-14 fret, so if I glue the purfling to the binding first and then try bending them on my bending iron (operative word being "try") I should be OK. I will pobably go with fiber as I'm not a big fan of plastic "anything". Also I could then use titebond and not have to worry about adhesive compatibility issues. If anyone suggests something different, I'm all ears!

Grizzly has wood fiber binding in Black but while you may not like plastic I think torise would look good. Wood binding can be problematic in that they tend to want to gap , especially at the waist so take your time and dry fit. You can use a small bar clamp to secure the waist.
The medullary graining is spectacular.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Started making braces for the top, cut the proper width and height for X-braces. Mounted them in my KMG brace contouring system and put a 28' radius on them lickedy split.
