I am going to make some bindings for my next project. I will be making them out of a nice piece of curly Maple stock that I have. My question is should they be cut from the face of the board (slab cut) or should they be cut from the edge of the board (quarter sawn so to speak)? Seems to me that if cut on the quarter there would or could be problems bending them.
Thanks,
David L

Re: Homemade Wood Bindings
not sure what you mean but bending on the quarter us more stable . Maple bends well in both directions what you have to consider is the figure . Cut it that gives the best figure and if you need 6 cut 6
with them being 1/16 in thick they bend well in the bender.

David,
I cut a bunch of non-figured maple on the quarter and have bent a couple of sets and it bent like a dream.
That would be the quarter face out as you would install the bindings.

Hi all...
Yeah, I've also had very good success with bending figured Maple for bindings. It doesn't seem to matter much whether quartered or not.
