Remember that the wood we use has a dimension that is flat sawn (horizontal grain) and a dimension that is vertical grain - you might call it quarter sawn or rift sawn, but "vertical grain" covers all that.

A vertical grain piece of wood will shrink and swell less in width and more in thickness, regardless of species. A flat sawn piece of wood will shrink and swell more in width and less in thickness. Tops and backs that are vertical grain will shrink and swell in width less than if they were flat sawn.

Vertical grain necks will shrink and swell more in depth than in width - and this is good.
