Sapele neck blanks
Anyone using Sapele for necks, I would appreciate any comments.

Martin had used some. It will do the job. It can be heavy though.

I have made two necks, solid sapele. I loved how it worked and looked, and it has almost no pores to fill.
I will be making more with this great wood.

Not my favorite mahogany by far, but it will make a fine neck.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....

I picked up this piece from a local hardwood dealer yesterday. It's not quite quartered so I'm going to do a laminated neck.
This guy has a great store, I paid $80 for the three pieces.

I've used sapele for a couple of guitar necks, a dozen banjo necks and 25 banjo block rims. A little heavier and harder than the usual mahogany, but still easy to work with.

Is that purple heart on the left? It will likely turn brown over time, no matter what finish you put on it.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....

Yep, it's Purple Heart. It was an impulse buy, I had no idea it would turn brown though.
