Vintage Gibson L-0/L-00 trussrods

Post by Phil »

I'm building a copy of a 40s L-0 and I've already gotthe body build, and I'm starting on the neck. I'm wondering what kind of trussrod would have been in this guitar originally. I'm using Christoph Grellier's plans, which don't show the rod. From other research on the web I know that on early Les Pauls they used a straight rod about 1/2" below the fingerboard, then they changed to the rod being a bit deeper at the body then the nut, then around 1960 they went to a curved rod. Am I correct to assume the 30s and 40s L-0 or L-00s had a straight compression rod?

I have access to a 1941 L-0 for reference but obviously there's no easy way to see what the rod is like without x-raying it.
