Most big box hardware stores carry a liquid rubber in a tin and in various colors. Just clean with alcohol or naptha, dip and wait for it to dry. It stays on the soft side so you'll get good grip when you clamp.

And as long as you bought that bottle of dip, here is a way to make custom edge protectors.

Wrap some blue tape around the edge inside out - sticky side out. Go around the end of, say, a gouge twice, making sure the tape covers the cutting edge. Go about 1-1/4" or so up the blade from the tip.

Dip the tool into the rubber stuff, let it dry, then do it a total of 3 times. Don't dip past the tape. When it is good and dry, pull it off the blade and cut a clean edge at the top with a pair of scissors.

Makes a perfect fit to gouges, skew edge chisels, carving chisels, anything you want to protect.
