Looking for hand Tools

Post by Sunset »

Hi All,

Gearing up for building. Have been studying for years and finally taking the plunge. Looking for the necessary planes, files etc. Not looking to pay top dollar for new tools and basically looking for a place that perhaps deals in used tools that still have life in them. Would like to maximize the use of as many hand tools as possible (within reason) to build acoustic guitars. Thank you very much.

It will take a little work, but check out your local antique stores and local auction companies. Really great value tools can often be found there. Older vintage tools can be of very high quality and substantially less expensive than new tools.

Hi Sunset, welcome to the forum and to building. I have a few old planes I can sell if you are interested.
I have rusty but serviceable, derusted, cleaned up and sharpened, and even somewhat restored planes in the #3, #4, #5, #6 sizes and perhaps a block plane or 2 or 3.
If you are interested in anything, let me know. I can sell one pretty cheap if they have not yet been worked on if you like doing the restoring yourself.

Hi Kevin,

Currently I have two planes. See attachments below.

1) Stanley No. 9.5 Block plane (It measures 6 1/4 " in length). It's missing the front hand knob. Would like to know where I can find a replacement part.

2) Stanley Handyman No. H1204

I will see what "type" planes I still need. Thank you.

Hi.

I use a vintage Stanley low angle 60 1/2", 6" block plane, with an adjustable throat all the time. My plane of choice is the Sheffield Stanley G12-060. You can still find nice models on eBay.

Hi Diane,

Yes I see. Very interesting (see attachment). Thank you kindly for the advice! Still studying what planes I need to add to my building tools.

Hey Sunset
That block plane is the same as the standard #9-1/2, but with what is called a knuckle-joint cap. Check for a number at the bottom of the left cheek - if it says #18 it came that way, if it says 9-1/2 or nothing, then it is bastardized. I like those caps, very comfortable. You are missing the cam and brass knob at the front - the cam is not essential as you can adjust the throat plate by hand, but the brass knob is very important for holding in the plate. If the plate should come loose while you are working, it could damage your piece.

A 9-1/2 complete should only cost you $15 or 20. A 60-1/2 is a minor improvement over the 9-1/2/18, but the cost is usually about double. Flea markets and garage sales can be your friend.

The red and blue plane is Stanley Handyman from the 50's or early 60's in very nice shape. You can make anything work well, but this plane has very poor bedding for the blade. Try it out and if you are having trouble with it, I might replace it. A Stanley/Sargent/Millers Falls #3 or #4 should cost about $20 complete.

I have a full assortment of these things in all price ranges - PM if you are interested

I use a #60-1/2, #5-1/4, and #7. The #5-1/4 is the width of a #3, but a foot long. Ideal for braces.

You may find that you want a smaller block plane. I've got a Sargent 206 that I like very much, but i also keep wishing I had something smaller.
