Clicking links takes me away from this site

Post by naccoachbob »

I clicked on some links recently and doing so took me to the link in the same window.
It might be better for the site if you can have any links open in a new window.
Another thing, when I post a reply to a topic or start a topic, and want to go back, I get a "Webpage has expired" notice.
I'd like to be able to just go back and maybe go to another topic. I just like clicking "back" I guess. :)

Thanks,
Bob

To reliably open a link in a new window (or tab, depending on how your browser is set up) hold down the Ctrl key when you click the link. This works on any web site.

I just wanted to let you guys know I'm still looking into these issues. The browser back works for the two browsers I use most frequently, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

JRHall, thanks for the advice on the right-click. That is how the internet is supposed to be browsed with the user controlling what windows are opened. I prefer that, but I can also see that it could be helpful for links in the forum to open a new window because most people would want stay to read the forum and be able to use the links as a reference.

Great tip JRHall, I would guess most people were not aware of that ability. I had forgotten myself.

Bob and Kevin,

I have tested the back button on Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Vista and it has worked for me no problem. I am going to try to get it tested on an XP system sometime soon.

Do you get the "Webpage has expired" notice everytime you use the back button or just in certain circumstances? If it only occurs sometimes, could you describe what steps you take before using the back button that are causing this message?

Thanks,

Sean

Sean, it's any time that I post a reply to a thread. Once the reply is submitted, I get confirmation of the post, and then the browser takes me back to my reply. I click "back", and get webpage expired.
If I keep clicking, eventually (3-4 clicks) I get back where I want to be.
I'm going to follow that step right now to make sure I'm giving good info.
If there's a change, I'll post it soon.
Just tested it, same result.

Bob,

Any time you submit a form using HTML's post action, data is submitted to the HTTP server. If you use your browser's back button the data would be sent to the server again. Internet Explorer gives you the "Webpage has expired" message and does not resubmit the data. They do this to prevent erroneous resubmission of data. Other browsers like FireFox give a similar message but asks if you would like to resubmit the post data.

This will happen on any website where you are submitting a form and use your browser's back button.
